IDEG Award Recipients

 

PETER BENNETT AWARD​

This award honors Dr. Peter Bennett’s many contributions to the epidemiology of type 2 diabetes mellitus and its complications arising from his greater than 50-year experience working among the Pima Indians of Southern Arizona. It is given in recognition of a major and longstanding contribution to the field of diabetes epidemiology.

 

​Selection Criteria: 
1.    Notable contributions to public health efforts in diabetes epidemiology. 
2.    Significant accomplishments in mentorship and teaching on the subject of diabetes epidemiology. 
3.    MD, PhD or equivalent doctoral degree. 
4.    Major leadership positions in professional societies, journal editorship, significant community service, and membership on expert committees or advisory panels at a national or international level.

HARRY KEEN MEMORIAL AWARD​

This award recognizes Professor Harry Keen’s many contributions to both diabetes clinical and epidemiologic research. His long career at Guy’s Hospital in London is marked by the Bedford Survey and the first international study on macrovascular disease in diabetes. Other of his significant accomplishments includes origination of the concepts of microalbuminuria and IGT, and development of the first pump for continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion. This award honors younger leaders in the field of diabetes epidemiology.

​Selection Criteria: 
1.    Age < 45 years at the time of the award presentation 
2.    Outstanding contributions to the field of diabetes epidemiology as judged by productivity and impact of publications and scientific presentations. 
3.    Significant accomplishments in mentorship and teaching on the subject of diabetes epidemiology. 
4.    MD, PhD or equivalent doctoral degree. 
5.    Notable leadership roles on expert panels, multi-center studies, advisory committees, and similar activities reflecting national or international involvement. 
6.    Any career disruptions due to carer’s leave, maternity leave, paternity leave or ongoing childcare will be taken into account when selecting applicants for this award. Applicants are encouraged to detail any significant career breaks that have affected their time as an “active researcher”, such as pregnancies, major illnesses, caring responsibilities and /or parental leave.

The nomination packages should include no more than a one page testimonial in support of the candidate and the candidate's current CV.
